China鈥檚 Economic Statecraft in Buying Hearts and Minds in Taiwan

Project Summary

The relationship across the Taiwan Strait has long been characterized by extensive economic integration and a hostile political relationship. This outcome is puzzling, particularly because the PRC has for decades encouraged deeper economic integration with Taiwan, suggesting that such integration would help to facilitate national unification by 鈥渨inning hearts and minds鈥 on the island. Yet the prospects for peaceful political integration between China and Taiwan appear as remote as ever: only a small percentage of Taiwan鈥檚 citizens view unification with the PRC as an attractive possibility. It seems, then, that economic integration has not facilitated political convergence as hoped by Beijing. In this project, we propose to use experimental surveys to comprehensively evaluate how China鈥檚 sharp power penetrates people鈥檚 political perceptions. Specifically, we empirically test how individuals in Taiwan view cross-Strait economic exchange and how economic exchange affects their views on cross-Strait political issues.
